Before I return to ‘The Rape of the Lock’ I wanted to print this gracious epitaph by Pope as there seem to have been so many horrible losses in recent days. For all the contradictions in Pope’s nature and his works his epitaphs, of which he wrote a considerable number, are often gentle and moving.
